No surprises in Justin Hurwitz taking the Oscars for best Original Song and Original Score respectively at last nights 89th Academy Awards. After the success of the highly musical film, 'Whiplash" Hurwitz was enrolled by the same director Damien Chazelle for 'La La Land'. The two met in Havard playing in the same band together, later became roommates and have had a highly collaborative relationship since then. Here's 'City of Stars' from the film:
The sound mixing Oscar went to Kevin O'Connell, Andy Wright, Robert Mackenzie and Peter Grace for the war film 'Hacksaw Ridge'. It was the 21st time O'Connell had been nominated, with a losing streak dating back to 1984 for Terms of Endearment. Here's the full backstage interview of the winners:
The sound editing Oscar went to Sylvain Bellemare for sci-fi flick 'Arrival'. The film used a lot of natural, organic sounds to create the Alien atmosphere rather than focusing on electrical and digital sound. To create voices of the aliens the sound designers blended natural sounds including birds, camels, pigs and a Maori flute. The sound of the spacecraft as it moved through the sky was made with recordings of shifting rocks and ice. Take a listen to the creepy results here:
